Artist�s Statement
Primarily based on photographic imagery, my work can best be described as eclectic in style, although always on the theme of the female nude. Treatments vary from straightforward photographs to digitally manipulated photo abstractions and giclee prints on watercolour paper that look far more like paintings than photos.
Whilst there are many artists and photographers whose work I much admire, I have no conscious influences. It is the scene, the light, the object, the person that inspire me; the common thread that runs through all my work being that there must be a certain inherent beauty, whether it be the sensuality of a young body or the timeless grandeur of a landscape or old building.
�Photography� means �painting with light�. With inanimate subjects the emphasis is on choosing the right angle and perspective and that decisive moment when the light is �just so�. With a human subject the mood created by the lighting is important, but it is the interplay of personalities and emotions, the establishment of a rapport between the artist and the model, that creates the character and mood of a pose. A subtle movement of the head or a limb, an unconscious gesture or look, these are the fleeting elements that define an unrepeatable image.
By adding degrees of abstraction to images of the human body, I seek to de-personalise it somewhat, whilst retaining the beauty and inherent emotional aura of the human form.
I also do a small amount of sculpture and body casting, which I hope to increase in the not-too-distant future and I also intend start painting and mixed-media work, ideally incorporating in some way all of the artforms that I love.
